Hotel Casa Verardo - Residenza D'Epoca, Venice, Italy

Casa Verardo is a boutique hotel in the heart of Venice. Our first four nights in Europe were spent here so we will always remember it. A beautiful old building, in excellent shape, and full of character and old world charm.
If you look at the Casa Verardo website, you won't see the exact room we stayed in for we took the cheapest room they had and, let's face it, all hotel websites like to show their best rooms, but ours was still roomy, very clean, and we had a view over the rooftops and apartments in our neighborhood. And, of course, we have a photo of our room for you! I did the prepay option which saved a lot of money. Those type of reservations are a bit scary since you pay the entire amount up front and the whole thing is non-refundable but it can work if you make the reservation as last minute as possible, which greatly lowers the risk of anything interfering with your plans.
One thing I love about most European hotels and rental apartments is that one bed means two beds. Most of the time a 'king bed' is two twin mattresses pushed together, which just as easily can be separated into two twin beds. You may see one king fitted sheet over the twin mattresses or two twin sheets. This saves a great deal of money in situations like ours because my son and I each need our own bed but can easily share a room, allowing us to save a lot of money by reserving a one-bedroom versus two.
Personally, I think the two twin mattress idea (shoved together as a king) is great for couples. You don't feel the other person moving around since they are on their own mattress, or rearranging their covers because you each have your own, or getting up in the middle of the night for something. Obviously, you can still cuddle (etc.) but when it's time to sleep, you sleep better. Most any mother knows that once you have a child, you become a very light sleeper and wake up over every little thing...for the rest of your life! This is great when your child is young but for some reason it seems to continue after they are grown and maybe even after they leave home. How brilliant that you can share the same bed with your partner but have separate mattresses. Kudos to whoever thought that idea up and to the Europeans for keeping it alive.
Case Verrardo was a great place to stay with reasonable rates (by Venice standards), breakfast included, and very close to San Marco Square if that's your thing. The staff was kind, very helpful, they spoke and understood English very well, and they had someone at the front desk 24 hours a day. There was a small bar next to the lobby and a lovely, enclosed and private outdoor terrace and garden.
One very nice feature that also helped with good sleep was that the rooms were completely quiet. They are advertised as soundproof, which they are, even if the credit for that goes to the thick stone walls that are over four centuries old (according to a staff member). Still, it made for good quality sleep.
