Tea for Two in Oughterard
"What wisdom can you find that is greater than kindness?"
- Jean-Jacques Rousseau
During our stay in the Connemara area, we drove to the village of Oughterard, a lovely place where we met several welcoming, kind people. One of those people was Vincent. We met Vincent when we came across his store and found the outside so intriguing that we went in to explore it further.
Inside, the store did not disappoint. The eclectic mix of merchandise was one of a kind, and it would be impossible to include it all, but here is a small sampling.
Vincent has had the store for about 13 years. He shared that what he loves most about his community is the people, the mountains, the countryside, the riverside and the sea. With a shop name of Rocky Mountain High, I asked him if he had heard of a man named John Denver and, yes, he had.
After looking around the store for a while, we shared a wonderful time of conversation with Vincent and Barry, another Oughterard resident that had come by the store to chat with Vincent. While we were all talking, Vincent made us a cup of tea right there in his shop.
Thank you, Vincent. We'll never forget the kindness we received in Oughterard.
Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778), quoted above, was a Francophone Genevan philosopher, writer, and composer of the 18th century. His political philosophy influenced the Enlightenment in France and across Europe, as well as aspects of the French Revolution and the overall development of modern political and educational thought.
